There are three blue-chip coin rarities in the Australian Commonwealth series: the 1930 penny, the 1923 halfpenny, and the 1922/1 overdate threepence. Of the three, the overdate threepence is the sleeper, in our view. Numismatists estimate around 900 pieces remain with collectors, investors, and in museums, mostly in low grade. Because the threepence was a small, everyday workhorse, surviving examples are often damaged, heavily worn, or bent. As a result, even very low-grade coins that receive a numerical grade with PCGS are genuinely scarce. The present example was sourced out of Queensland and is the third or fourth finest we have handled in fifteen years. The rims are complete and denticles clear, while both the kangaroo and emu still show some musculature and feather detail, respectively. A well-preserved example and top-end coin, all things considered, and an ideal coin for the coin connoisseur or sophisticated numismatic investor. Professional Coin Grading Service is the global leader in coin authentication and grading. With over 60 million coins graded and counting, PCGS is trusted by collectors, dealers, and investors to certify authenticity, protect value, and elevate market confidence. This is a direct conversion of the 70-point PCGS grade to a 10-point scale, intended to present the grade in a more intuitive format for newer collectors. It is not our personal opinion or an attempt at regrading the coin to a different standard.
