Three piece proof Sovereign set, issued with a special reverse design to celebrate 200 years of these remarkable British gold coins. The image of Saint George and the dragon is instantly recognisable to collectors and investors. It's closely associated with the history of the Sovereign and dates back to the reign of George III when the first of these coins were issued. However, the design that was used in 1817 was a little different to that utilised on modern Sovereigns. Benedetto Pistrucci's original design, enclosed England's patron saint, his horse and the cowering dragon within a stylised garter, bearing the 'HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE' motto of the Order of the Garter: the most senior order of knighthood in the British honours system. This original Sovereign design is replicated on coins from the 2017 Sovereign family, including the 'full' Sovereign, Half Sovereign and Quarter Sovereign included in this set. The obverses all show Jody Clark's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. The date is included in the obverse legend, rather than on the reverse as is standard. Just 1,000 of these proof sets were issued by The Royal Mint in 2017 with the anniversary design making them particularly sought after. These 22 carat (916.7) gold coins are struck to standard specifications and come in their original presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed. The total weight of these pieces is 13.97 grams, equating to an actual gold weight of 12.80 grams. The gold content means that this 2017 set is VAT free and the legal status tender of these coins offers a Capital Gains Tax exemption.
