2016 Gold Proof Four Krugerrand Queen Elizabeth II's Ninetieth Birthday Mintmark South African Coin Set
Limited edition Krugerrand collectors set from the South African Mint, issued to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday. Elizabeth II was born in 1926 and became Queen of the United Kingdom as well as Queen of South Africa. This title was abolished in 1961 when South Africa voted to become a republic and left the Commonwealth of Nations. In 1994 SA would rejoin the Commonwealth, reasserting international ties of language and culture between the UK and the Republic. This attractive 2016 presentation set, marking an important royal anniversary, contains a 1oz Krugerrand, a 1/2oz Krugerrand, a 1/4oz Krugerrand and a 1/10oz Krugerrand. All are composed of 22 carat gold and offered with a fine proof finish. All the coins in this set feature the distinctive portrait by Otto Schultz of Boer statesman, Paul Kruger, to the obverse. He gives these coins their name, combined with the Rand, the official currency of South Africa. The reverse shows the image of a ‘pronking’ springbok, the countries national animal, by C L Steynberg. For this issue, a special privy mark has been added to each coin, reading ‘QE II 90’, above the antelope. The total weight of this set is 62.76 grams, equating to a gold fine weight of 57.55 grams. The coins are offered in their original wooden presentation box, sealed in capsules. Also included, a numbered certificate of authenticity confirming a LEP of just 150 sets.
