2009 Gold Proof Four Krugerrand Prestige South African Coin Set
Limited edition 2009 prestige gold Krugerrand set from the South African Mint, with only 1,000 sets authorised for release. The gold Krugerrand coin was first released in 1967 by the South African Mint who exploited a gap in the investment gold market by providing a gold coin weighing a troy ounce. Although primarily a bullion coin, the Krugerrand is also available in a proof finish to appeal to coin collectors. This attractive 2010 presentation set contains a 1oz Krugerrand, a 1/2oz Krugerrand, a 1/4oz Krugerrand and a 1/10oz Krugerrand, giving a fine gold weight of 1.85 troy ounces. All the coins in this set feature the distinctive portrait of the 19th century South African Republic president Paul Kruger on the obverse by German engraver Otto Schultz. These pre-owned South African coins were christened with Kruger's name, combined with the Rand, the modern-day currency of South Africa. Complementing this familiar design is the 'pronking' springbok reverse, which shows the national animal of South Africa. It was designed by sculptor Coert Steynberg. The total weight of this set is 62.76 grams, with each coin struck multiple times using hand-polished dies to give them a flawless proof finish. The coins are offered in their original wooden presentation box, sealed in capsules to preserve their finish. A numbered certificate of authenticity is also included, confirming this set is a genuine product from South Africa's national mint.
