Sixteen silver proof Fifty Pence pieces! The Royal Mint issued the first 50ps in 1969, just before the UK’s currency went decimal. It was the worlds first seven-sided coin, designed to be easily identified by touch and sight. 2009 marked the fortieth anniversary of these distinctive coins and the Mint celebrated with a limited edition collectors sets featuring some of the most memorable designs seen on 50ps down the decades. Between 1969 and 2009 three different royal portraits were featured on 50p reverses but a whole range of commemorative designs were issued too, in addition to the classic seated Britannia motif by Christopher Ironside, used through this period. Included in this set are .925 sterling silver proof editions of 16 important Fifty Pence designs, reissued for the anniversary year. Inside the bespoke glossy black case you’ll find a large and small Ironsides Britannia 50p, a European Economic Community 50p, a Single European Market 50p, an EEC 25th Anniversary 50p, a D-Day Landings 50p, a National Health Service 50p, a Public Libraries 50p, a Suffragettes 50p, a Four Minute Mile 50p, a Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary 50p, two Victoria Cross 50ps (both types), a Scouts 50p, the new definitive shield-back 50p, introduced in 2009, and the infamous Kew Gardens 50p. The reverse of each of these coins features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Elizabeth II. Just 2,500 of these silver sets were issued in 2009 and its the only way to own silver proof 2009 dated versions of the majority of the coins included.
