1995 Gold Proof Three Coin Sovereign Set Queen Elizabeth II
Thee coin gold proof Sovereign set from The Royal Mint, dated 1995. The Two Pound coin or Double Sovereign in this set features a special dove design, issued to mark 50 years since the end of the Second World War. The reverse is the work of John Mills. The edge reads ‘1945 IN PEACE GOODWILL 1995’, inspired by the preface to Winston Churchill’s history of the World War Two. The obverse shows Raphael Maklouf’s third definitive portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, in use on British coins between 1985 and 1997. This portrait of Elizabeth II is also used on the Half Sovereign and ‘full’ Sovereign in this set. These two coins feature the instantly recognisable image of Saint George to the reverse. This motif - created by Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci - has been a perennial presence on these coins since they were first struck in 1817. All three Sovereigns are struck in 22 carat (916.7) gold to finest proof standard. The coins conform to historic specifications and have a total weight of 27.95 grams. This equates to an actual gold weight of 25.62 grams. Their gold content means that these coins are exempt from VAT and, as UK legal tender, a Capital Gains Tax exemption also applies. Only 1,250 of these three-Sovereign sets were issued in 1995 by The Royal Mint. This one comes in its original presentation packaging which comprises of individual capsules and a red leather box.
