1993 Four-Coin Gold Proof Sovereign Elizabeth II Set
Four coin gold proof Sovereign set from The Royal Mint. This pre-owned set was released in 1993 to celebrate a century since the first four coin Sovereign set was issued with the classic St George and the dragon motif. This instantly recognisable design was created by Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci (1783-1855) for the first modern Sovereigns. While today the design is synonymous with these 22-carat gold coins there was a long period during the nineteenth century when an alternate shield design was utilised. The St George engraving was only revived late in the reign of Queen Victoria and has for the last hundred years been a perennial presence on these gold coins. This 1993 commemorative set contains a Five Sovereign, Double Sovereign, 'full' Sovereign and Half Sovereign, all featuring the image of England's patron saint, mounted on a rearing horse with the date below. The obverse of each coin shows Raphael Maklouf's definitive currency portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Also included is a medal featuring a portrait of Benedetto Pistrucci, inspired by a cameo portrait by his daughter. The other side shows variant Sovereign designs from 1817, 1821 and 1893, illustrating how the design was modified down the years. Just 1,250 of these 4-coin sets were issued by The Royal Mint in 1993 and we are offering this one in its original presentation packaging with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
