The COA suggests that 7,500 1990 sets were issued but other sources suggest a much lower figure: perhaps just 1,937. Raphael Maklouf's third definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of all three coins. This design was in use on UK coins between 1985 and 1997. The reverse design is the work of Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci and has been a perennial presence on gold Sovereigns since these coins were first struck in 1817.
