These Royal Mint coins feature four classic designs, representing the constituent nations of the United Kingdom with national flora, ringed by the Diamond Diadem: the crown Queen Elizabeth II traditionally wore when attending the State Opening of Parliament. The Scottish coin (dated 1984) features a thistle, the Welsh edition (1985) a leek, Northern Ireland (1986) a flax plant and the English £1 (1987) a sprawling oak tree. All the designs are the work of silversmith Leslie Durbin and can also be seen on circulating UK coinage.
