1980 Isle Of Man Sovereign Gold Proof Coin
Gold proof 1980 Isle of Man Sovereign from the Pobjoy Mint, complete with Viking ship privy mark. This collector's coin features the typical Viking raider reverse design used on this series. The design depicts the warrior on horseback, sword raised, his steed rearing above a prone victim. The reverse owes something to the classic Saint George design on British Sovereigns, which served as the model for these Manx coins. Both are struck in 7.98 grams of solid 91.67% fine gold, in this case with a proof finish. Like their UK counterparts, these coins bear a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Pobjoy Mint issued a limited number of these proof Sovereigns in 1980, and this example is supplied in the original presentation case, complete with a certificate of authenticity.
