This Ceylon proof coinage set of 1971 shares its mintage year with a significant year in the island's history. The 1971 uprising, although crushed by the government, precipitated constitutional changes that led to Ceylon being renamed the Republic of Sri Lanka. These seven coins, therefore, are from the last year of Ceylon's 'existence' as a nation. The coins themselves were first introduced in 1963. The amorial arms of Ceylon, obverse, are paired with a reverse showing the denomination with a decorative surround. They are here offered at proof standard - struck by The Royal Mint - and, notably, in a variety of shapes (including a scallop-edged 10c). This pre-owned Ceylon set is a slice of Sri Lankan history and an impressive set in its own right. Included is The Royal Mint's display case and envelope.
