1952 South African Eleven Coin George VI Long Proof Set
Sought-after South African Mint 11-coin proof set, issued in 1952: the last year of King George VI's reign. Very few official gold coins were issued during George's time on the throne (1937-1952). The gold Pond and Half Pond in this set, as well as highly collectable 1937 Sovereigns, are part of that number. Ponds and Half Ponds are struck in 22-carat gold to the same specification as the Sovereign and Half Sovereign, respectively. These issues feature a 'pronking' springbok design by Coert Steynberg to the reverse, later used on SA Mint Krugerrands. The two gold coins, as well as the other nine 50% silver South African coins in this set, boast a proof finish and a portrait of the King by Humphrey Paget to the obverse. The Paget effigy is also featured in George VI's British coinage and is highly regarded by numismatists. The large Five Shilling coin is a special issue commemorating the 300th anniversary of the founding of Cape Town with a reverse design by Marion Walgate. This set is an official issues from the SA Mint from a limited issue that is increasingly hard to find complete and in good condition.
