2023 Flying Scotsman Two Pound Coloured Brilliant Uncirculated Coin In Folder
The world's most iconic steam locomotive, the Flying Scotsman, is the subject of this brilliant uncirculated coloured Two Pound coin from The Royal Mint. Commissioned by the London North Eastern Railway in 1923 and formally known as LNER Class A3 4472, the Flying Scotsman saw 40 years of active service and covered an astonishing 2.08 million miles. It was the flagship steam locomotive of British Rail, covering the famed 'Flying Scotsman' London King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverly service which gave the locomotive its name. After its retirement, it did two tours abroad: Canada and the United States in 1969-72 and Australia in 1988-89. Accolades for this impressive loco are the first steam engine to break the 100mph barrier and the longest non-stop run of 422 miles. Experienced coin designer John Bergdahl was tasked with bringing the Flying Scotsman to life onto this UK £2 coin, with Royal Mint product designer Ffion Gwillim adding the attractive colour printing. Complementing this amazing design is Martin Jennings' engraving of HM King Charles III on the obverse. On the edge is the appropriate inscription 'LIVE FOR THE JOURNEY'. Specifications are a diameter of 28.40 millimetres and a weight of 12.00 grams, with the centre composed of cupro-nickel and the outer ring made of nickel-brass. Each collector's piece is struck twice during production to give its BUnc finish. This pre-owned coin is housed in a protective coin sleeve, which is the original Royal Mint packaging.
