2023 Edward Jenner Innovation In Science Brilliant Uncirculated Two Pound Innovation In Science Coin
A new official Royal Mint Two Pound coin in brilliant uncirculated celebrating the achievements of British physician Edward Jenner, FRS FRCPE. Known as 'the father of immunology', Jenner pioneered the world's first smallpox vaccine. 200 years after his death and in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2023 is an apt time to honour his legacy. His work in using cowpox variolation as an immuniser against smallpox is credited with saving countless lives and paved the way vaccines against common and too often deadly diseases to be created. In the late 18th century, smallpox had a mortality rate as high as 20%, so the benefit of Jenner's cannot be overestimated. This £2 coin features an abstract smallpox cell and a representation of the people whose lives Jenner's vaccine saved, together with an inscription reading: 'EDWARD JENNER A VACCINE TO END SMALLPOX'. The edge is lettered with the words: 'INNOVATION IN SCIENCE · JENNER'. On the obverse is Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III. These collectable UK coins are supplied in their original presentation folder from The Royal Mint, packed with information about the smallpox vaccine. Housed in the slipcase is a clear protective capsule, preserving the BU finish and keeping your collector's coin in pristine condition. It weighs 28.28 grams and measures 38.61 millimetres in diameter, and is composed of a nickel-brass outer ring with a cupro-nickel centre.
