2022 marked the 25th anniversary of the reintroduction of the Two Pound coin into general circulation, and The Royal Mint celebrated the occasion with this brilliant uncirculated £2 piece. Certain types of Two Pounds did circulate from 1823 onwards, but they were seldom seen. Bi-metallic 2 Pound coins were struck for the first time in 1997 and entered mass circulation the next year. The inaugural coin featured Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the 1998 edition has Ian Rank-Broadley's engraving of Her Majesty. Until 2015, the predominant reverse design seen on the reverse was Bruce Rushin's 'Technology' engraving, symbolising the history of technological development from the Iron Age, through the Industrial Revolution and into the age of the Internet. This instantly recognisable design has been recreated for this collector's piece, which is unusual for featuring two dates: '1997' on the reverse and '2022' on the obverse. A special '25' latent feature is prominent in the centre. The Queen is again seen on the obverse on this edition, but it's the fifth UK coin effigy of her by Jody Clark. You'll spot a unique privy mark to the bottom left of Her Majesty. The edge inscription reads 'STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS', taken from a letter by Sir Isaac Newton, a former Master of the Royal Mint.
