2021 Alfred The Great Five Pound Brilliant Uncirculated Mint Pack Coin
Brilliant uncirculated Alfred the Great Five Pound coin in the original Royal Mint packaging. The year 2021 marked 1,150 years since the legendary Alfred (Ælfred) the Great was crowned, the only monarch in English history to have a 'Great' epithet in his title. To celebrate the achievements of this remarkable early English monarch, The Royal Mint has released a small range of commemorative pieces, including this £5 Crown coin. Alfred became King of Wessex in AD 871 while his kingdom was threatened by marauding Vikings. 1,150 years later, Alfred is remembered for successfully pushing back his Scandinavian rivals, becoming the dominant ruler among the small kingdoms that occupied the British Isles in the ninth century. After his reoccupation of London in 886 he began to style himself as 'King of the Anglo-Saxons', although he would never rule all of England in his lifetime. The fascinating reverse design is by esteemed Royal Mint artist John Bergdahl, inspired by the Alfred Jewel, a masterpiece of early mediaeval goldsmithing, found in Somerset and now in the Ashmolean Museum. The obverse features Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, used on British coinage from 2015 to 2023. This piece has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and is struck in 28.28 grams of curpro-nickel. It's finished to the Mint's BUnc standard, which has a superior finish compared to ordinary circulation coinage. This pre-owned Alfred the Great coin comes in its original presentation folder from The Royal Mint, and you can secure yours today with free delivery to UK addresses.
