2020 VE Day Two Pound Brilliant Uncirculated Mint Pack Coin
In 2020, The Royal Mint released a special set of collectable Two Pound coins to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe day. Gold proof, Silver proof and brilliant uncirculated base metal versions of the £2 coin were produced, with this piece being the BU edition. On the 8th May, 1945, The Allied Powers formally accepted the unconditional surrender of National Socialist Germany, bringing a complete end to the fighting in Europe. At 10:23pm Berlin time, Field-Marshal Wilhelm Keitel signed the Instrument of Surrender in Berlin, which ended the hostilities on the Eastern Front. Earlier, the Germans had unofficially surrendered on the other fronts they were fighting on. The sequence of events caused a massive outburst of jubilation and relief around the world, with people out in the streets celebrating. This spirit is captured on the reverse of this UK coin, which shows citizens celebrating the end of the war. It was designed by Royal Mint artist Dominique Evans. On the obverse, Queen Elizabeth II is seen, which is fitting as she was involved in the street celebrations at the time. Her portrait is designed by Jody Clark. Specifications of the coin are a bimetallic alloy of cupronickel in the centre and a nickel-brass outer ring, a total diameter of 28.40 millimetres and a total weight of 12.00 grams.
