2020 Megalosaurus Fifty Pence Coloured Brilliant Uncirculated Dinosauria Coin
The first release in the Royal Mint's new Dinosauria 50p coin series is the 2020 BUnc Megalosaurus 50 Pence. Co-operating with the Natural History Museum, the Royal Mint introduced these new Fifty Pence coins to pay tribute to the palaeontologists who made ground-breaking discoveries when examining prehistoric reptile fossils. On this edition, the mighty megalosaurus takes pride of place on the reverse of this coin. It was imagined by the noted palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls, who has accurately depicted the creature as it would have likely been when it roamed the earth millions of years ago. Beneath the picture of the dinosaur reads 'BUCKLAND 1824', which is a nod to the discoverer of the megalosaurus, William Buckland. In 1824, he formed the first scientific description of a dinosaur using fragments of jaw and bone found in Oxfordshire. In front of this dinosaur design is a representation of the piece of jaw bone which inspired his theory. On the obverse side, Queen Elizabeth II can be seen, as depicted by engraver Jody Clark. Each coin is struck twice during production to give a brilliant uncirculated finish, which is a higher standard than the coins found in normal circulating change. Specifications are a weight of 8.00 grams and a diameter of 27.30 millimetres. Included is a coin slipcase, full of information about Gideon Mantell and the iguanodon dinosaur.
