The third and final coin in The Royal Mint's Voyage of Discovery collection follows Captain James Cook in his journey to discover the theorised continent of 'Terra Australis'. Several different types were released by the Mint, with this edition being the brilliant uncirculated 2020 Two Pound. Once Captain Cook had completed his mission to observe the transit of Venus on the island of Tahiti, his next order, which he learned from opening a sealed letter, was to search to Southern Pacific for the Southern Continent that was believed to exist. Over the next few months, he would successfully map the entire coastline of New Zealand and a significant portion of the Eastern coastline of Australia. The reverse of this collectable £2, by Gary Breeze, shows the bow of HM Bark Endeavour close to a Maori outrigger canoe. Outlines of Botany Bay and New Zealand are placed in the background. On the obverse, Jody Clark's engraving of Queen Elizabeth II is visible, which is the fifth and final UK coin portrait of the late monarch. On the edge the inscription reads 'OCEANI INVESTIGATOR ACERRIMVS', which is Latin for 'intrepid investigator of the seas'. Each coin weighs 12.00 grams, measures 28.40 millimetres in diameter and is composed of a cupro-nickel centre and a nickel-brass outer ring. It's struck twice to give it a BU finish, far sharper than ordinary circulation coins. As standard, your pre-owned UK Two Pound coin is issued in the original Royal Mint presentation folder which includes information about Captain Cook and has space to insert the other coins in the collection.
