The Royal Mint marked the official withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union with this BU Brexit 50p coin. Britain's membership of the EU was always a difficult and contentious topic in domestic politics since London joined in 1973. In a referendum in 2016 the British public voted narrowly to leave, by 52% to 48%, reversing the referendum result in 1975. Like the withdrawal process, this commemorative 50p had a turbulent history, with the coin having to be put back on the drawing board several times because the official withdrawal date was pushed back. Originally it was 29 March, 2019, then it was 31 October, 2019. The Royal Mint actually struck over a million coins with the latter date, which had to be melted down and recycled once it became obvious the withdrawal was to be pushed back again! It was third time lucky with the date of 31 January 2020, which is visible on the reverse of this UK coin, alongside the quote 'Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations'. This calligraphic design was done by Thomas Docherty, and the quote interestingly comes from Thomas Jefferson's inaugural address as US President. The obverse shows Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is her fifth official UK coin portrait. The coin's specifications are a weight of eight grams and a diameter of 27.30 millimetres. It's offered in a green and purple coin sleeve, full of interesting information about the UK and the EU. A perfect gift for any eurosceptic, or cheeky gift for any europhile!
