To celebrate the 160th anniversary of the birth of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the Royal Mint released a special edition BUnc 50 Pence coin, struck in cupro-nickel. Sir Arthur originally graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in medicine, notably volunteering as a physician in the Second Boer War in South Africa. He was an accomplished individual, who had a strong influence in the political and legal spheres and even had an interest in architecture. However, Sir Arthur's most recognisable works are his novels detailing the fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. Between 1887 and 1927, London's most famous detective featured in four novels and an incredible 56 short stories, making the character synonymous with murder-mystery crime stories. This commemorative UK coin pays homage to Sherlock Holmes on the reverse, with his deerstalker hat and tobacco pipe making up the distinct silhouette of the detective. It was designed by Stephen Raw. Surrounding the image are the titles of numerous of Doyle's most famous stories, including The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Final Problem. On the obverse side of the coin is Jody Clark's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the fifth official royal portrait used on British coinage. The coin weighs eight grams, measures 27.30 millimetres and is struck twice to give a brilliant uncirculated finish. You will receive the original Royal Mint packaging with your 50p coin, which includes a protective capsule built into the information folder.
