2019 British Culture Fifty Pence Brilliant Uncirculated Coin Set
Five coin Fifty Pence set celebrating 50 years of the world’s first seven-sided coin. The first 50ps were introduced in 1969, just before Decimal Day when the UK switched to decimal currency. Initially, these coins bore the figure of Britannia - the female personification of Britain - on their reverse. The work of Christopher Ironside, the design connected the new denomination to historic UK coinage and was used for decades, including after the 50p was reissued in 1997. Over the years, a wide range of commemorative designs have also featured on these coins and some of the most famous have been reproduced in this set. It contains reissued editions of the 2010 Girl Guiding 50p, the infamous 2009 Kew Gardens 50p, the 2007 Scouting 50p, the 2004 Four Minute Mile 50p and the classic Britannia 50p. The five coins are struck to the Royal Mint’s Brilliant Uncirculated standard. BU or BUnc coins have the same designs as circulated coins but with a finer finish, intended for collectors. Otherwise, these coins conform to standard specifications: they are each composed on 8.00 grams of cupronickel with a diameter of 27.30 millimetres. Two of the reverses show the original dates of issue while the obverses feature Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen along with the date the set was issued: 2019. Their finish is protected by the original, attractive fold out wallet, perfect for display, with clear inserts that allow you to appreciate the coins without directly handling.
