Brilliant uncirculated Royal Mint 2018 Armistice Two Pound UK coin in original packaging. A large collection of coins were issued by The Royal Mint between 2014 and 2018 in collaboration with the Imperial War Museum, marking the centenaries of the events of the First World War. This brilliant uncirculated £2 edition in base metal marks an incredibly poignant event: the November armistice where the guns fell silent. For many, the 11th of November 1918 was a day of reflection and mourning for the casualties of war, as well as a celebration of the armistice. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, across Britain schools and workplaces closed for the day, bells, train whistles, car horns and sirens rang out, and impromptu street parties were held. Big Ben chimed for the first time in four years. The reverse of this coin features an emotive design by renowned textual artist Stephen Raw. At the centre of his engraving are the words 'The truth untold, the pity of war'. These words are taken from a poem called 'Strange Meeting' by Wilfred Owen, one of the most famous soldier poets of the First World War.Around the edge of this Two Pound is the inscription 'WILFRED OWEN KILLED IN ACTION 4 NOVEMBER 1918'. The obverse features Jody Clark's effigy of The Queen, the fifth and final official portrait, used on UK currency between 2015 and 2022. This pre-owned collectable coin is struck in 12.00 grams of cupro-nickel / nickel-brass alloy and measures 28.40 millimetres in diameter: the same size as a standard UK Two Pound coin. It's offered in its original packaging from The Royal Mint, which consists of an informative slipcase full of details about the November armistice.
