2018 Spitfire Two Pound Brilliant Uncirculated RAF Centenary Coin
To mark the Royal Air Force's centenary year in 2018, The Royal Mint released a series of coins celebrating the service's proud history. This edition is the brilliant uncirculated coin, housed in an attractive slipcase which is the original packaging. The RAF was the first independent air force ever established, being founded in the last months of the First World War. 100 years later, a series of coins mark the different eras of aircraft that have served in this pioneering branch of the British armed forces. On the reverse of this edition the iconic Spitfire fighter plane takes centre stage, which is arguably Britain's best-known aircraft and synonymous with the RAF. The reverse of this coin is designed by brothers Neil and Robert Talbot, and it shows three Spitfires side-by-side in flight with the centenary dates and 'SPITFIRE RAF' inscribed around the outer nickel-brass rim. On the edge you'll see the inscription of 'PER ARDUA AD ASTRA', which is Latin for 'through adversity to the stars' and is the official motto for the RAF. This brilliant design is paired with Jody Clark's effigy of Elizabeth II, which is the fifth UK coin portrait of Her Majesty. Specifications of this UK £2 coin are a weight of 12.00 grams and a diameter of 28.40 millimetres, with an alloy composed of cupronickel and nickel-brass. A great gift for aircraft and military enthusiasts, which is supplied complete with a limited edition coin folder with details about the RAF.
