To mark 1,000 years since Canute the Great was crowned King of England at the old St Paul's Cathedral in 1017, the Royal Mint issued a set of commemorative Five Pound Crown coins. This edition is the brilliant uncirculated version, which is composed of cupro-nickel and is struck twice during production to give an excellent quality finish. Also known as King Cnut, the Viking monarch was King of Denmark, Norway and England by the time of his death in 1035, forming what was known as the North Sea Empire. He is perhaps most well-known for his wisdom, with the story recorded by Henry of Huntingdon describing the King's insistence to his flattering advisers that he didn't possess the power to control the tide, and therefore wasn't omnipotent. On the coin's reverse, the design features a stylised left-facing portrait of the King Canute, designed by Lee R Jones and inspired by the contemporary coinage made during the King's reign. This is paired with Jody Clark's official UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, introduced in 2015. This pre-owned coin weighs 28.28 grams, has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and is encased in an informative Royal Mint coin sleeve - the original packaging. On the packaging is a stunning image of the bow of a Viking longboat, which makes it the perfect gift for any coin collector or Viking enthusiast in your life.
