This Brilliant Uncirculated Five Pound coin celebrates Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday; a landmark event as she became the first British monarch to reach their hundredth decade. On 12 June 2016, 10,000 guests gathered for a street party on The Mall in London to celebrate the occasion. The guests were chosen to recognise The Queen’s patronage of over 600 charities and organisations, in the UK and wider Commonwealth. As well as parties and events across the country, The Royal Mint released a collection of commemorative coins and sets to honour the occasion, including this BU £5. The coin’s obverse features Jody Clark’s portrait of The Queen which was released the previous year. Its reverse features a design from acclaimed painter, sculptor and illustrator, Christopher Hobbs and was approved by Her Majesty. It features a central EIIR cypher surrounded by a wreath of roses which, according to the artist, was ‘inspired by the heraldic rose of England and The Queen’s love of flowers’. Feminine and strong, the nine roses, all slightly different, represent her nine decades of life. Around the wider edge is inscribed ‘Full of Honour and Years’. Produced in the same cupro-nickel alloy as the coins in ordinary change, this crown is finished to a much higher standard to give a beautiful finish with every detail evident. Weighing the standard 28.28 grams with a diameter of 38.61 millimetres, it comes in the original presentation wallet with additional pictures and information about Her Majesty’s ninety years. 74,195 coins were produced in this presentation.
