2015 Sir Winston Churchill Five Pound Brilliant Uncirculated Mint Pack Coin
Twice Prime Minster, a war veteran, anonymous Royal Academy painter, and prolific writer, Sir Winston Churchill has more claim than anyone else to be the greatest Englishman who ever lived. 50 years after his death, The Royal Mint released a series of Five Pound coins in commemoration, including this cupro-nickel brilliant uncirculated version. Although known best for his inspiring leadership during the Second World War, he made a massive impact on society through his oratory, literature and historical analysis. His writing, both when he was a war correspondent and later on as a historian ultimately led to him winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. Without doubt, the great man is best known for his achievements as a politician and statesman during WWII. However, he wasn't without his faults, with his most notable mistake coming in the 1920s when he placed the pound sterling back on the pre-WWI gold standard parity, causing a depression. The reverse features a design by sculptor Mark Richards of a close-up portrait of the former Prime Minister. It focusses on elements that make him instantly recognisable, such as his jawline and eyes. Only one word is inscribed on the reverse: 'CHURCHILL', mimicking the original 1965 crown issued on his death. The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the monarch who knighted Churchill in the first year of her reign. This collectable UK coin weighs 28.28 grams, has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and is issued in the original Royal Mint packaging, which consists of a coin slipcase.
