Lady Diana Spencer joined the British royal family when she married Prince Charles in 1981 and became known for her charisma, activism and glamorous lifestyle. Her untimely passing caused an unprecedented outpouring of public grief in the UK and around the world. This Brilliant Uncirculated Five Pound coin was issued by The Royal Mint in the aftermath of The Peoples’ Princess’s tragic death in 1997. Proceeds from the original sales of all the commemorative proof Crowns, including this BU edition went towards memorials and legacies recommended by The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Committee, including a memorial in Kensington Gardens and developing community nursing teams for children with life-threatening illnesses. The £5 shows a poignant, right-facing portrait of the Princess of Wales by David Cornell. The dates ’1961’ and ‘1997’ appear below her chin, with the inscription ‘IN MEMORY OF DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES’. This is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, introduced to British coinage the previous year as the fourth such official coinage effigy. This coin comes in its original presentation folder, with quotes and extracts from poems commemorating her life. In a limited edition, the crown weighs the traditional 28.28g with a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. Although made from the same cupro-nickel alloy as the coins in your change, this special collectable version is struck in a higher finish, leaving a shinier and more discernible design.
