The United Kingdom took over the revolving Presidency of the European Council for the first six months of 1998. To celebrate the occasion, which also coincided with the 25th anniversary of UK's entry into the European Economic Community, The Royal Mint released a collection of special edition 50 Pence coins. This product is a set of BU 50p coins, one showing the traditional Britannia reverse by Christopher Ironside and the other reverse showing the 12 EU stars design by John Mills. The latter piece is the first commemorative 50p to be issued in the smaller specifications introduced in 1997. Britain applied numerous times to join the then EEC, and after the removal of the French veto they finally joined the trading bloc in 1973. It represented a change in the position of Britain in the world, from head of a global empire to a constituent nation in a European economic and political union. Both 50p pieces are housed in an attractive blue and yellow themed presentation folder, which includes protective capsules for the coins. Specifications are a diameter of 27.30 millimetres each and a total weight of 16.00 grams, or 8.00 grams each. During the production process, ech collectable 50p is struck twice to give a brilliant uncirculated finish, which is a better standard than ordinary circulation coinage.
