Collectible, brilliant uncirculated 'Nations United For Peace' Two Pound coin from The Royal Mint. Following the devastation and destruction of the Second World War, fifty nations came together in San Francisco in June 1945 to discuss the formation of the United Nations. On the 24 October that year, the United Nations charter was ratified and the member states committed to maintaining world peace and security, and working for social progress. Fifty years later, in 1995, The Royal Mint honoured the anniversary by releasing a collection of commemorative Two Pound coins, including this brilliant uncirculated edition. They were designed by Michael Rizzello, a renowned sculptor who had himself done military service during and after WW2. His design features the United Nations emblem and number 50 surrounded by a cluster of flags. He stated that the flags are purely symbolic, and he 'avoided any reference to number, individual member states, or their perceived importance; simply, nations uniting around and into the United Nations'. The legend reads: 'NATIONS UNITED FOR PEACE 1945-1995'. Rizzello's design is paired with Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, the third official portrait to feature on her UK coins. Struck in nickel-brass alloy, this old-style £2 is finished to a much higher standard than circulating coins and comes sealed in its original presentation folder.
