1988 Royal Shield One Pound Brilliant Uncirculated Coin In Folder
Since the reign of Queen Victoria, this version of the Royal Shield has been used for the monarch's official flag, as well as by courts and governments around the Commonwealth. It features a quartered shield depicting, in two quarters, the three lions of England, in one quarter, the rampant lion of Scotland, and in the final quarter, the harp of Ireland. Between 1984 and 1987, The Royal Mint released a new series of One Pound coins. They featured designs representing each of the four Home Nations through their national flora, from the Oak Tree of England to the flax plant of Northern Ireland. For the 1988 £1, including this Brilliant Uncirculated version, a new design was released representing the United Kingdom as a whole. Created by the Deputy Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, Derek Gorringe, it displays the Royal Shield of The Queen, with the St Edward Crown on top. This crown is the centrepiece of the Crown Jewels, and was made for Charles II in 1661. Beneath the shield and crown design is the denomination 'ONE POUND' inscribed. An edge inscription is also used on this coin, reading 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' or 'an ornament and a safeguard.' The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty the Queen. A total of 29,550 One Pound coins were issued in this BU format, and yours will come in its original folder from The Royal Mint. It weighs 9.50 grams and has a diameter of 22.50 millimetres. Struck in the same nickel-brass alloy as the coins in your change, this Pound coin is finished to Brilliant Uncirculated standard giving a higher quality and greater definition than circulating coins.
