22-carat gold South African pre-owned 1 Rand coins. These One Rand coins were struck to the same specifications as UK Half Sovereigns, each weighing in at 3.99 grams and offering 0.1176 troy ounces of pure gold. You will recognise the springbok reverse design which is also used on South African Krugerrands and was designed by Coert Steynberg. The reverse shows a portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, the founder and first commander of Cape Town. These 1R coins were struck annually in Pretoria from 1961 to 1983, with proof issues also made in most years. The mintage figures remained fairly low, with the standard strikes often around 10,000, with some substantially lower. Our mixed-date best-value 1R gold coins are selected from our available stock, which has been tested and authenticated by our expert numismatists.
