2020 gold bullion 1/4oz White Lion of Mortimer coin from The Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts series. This design was the eighth bullion release in the popular, 11-part range. These coins celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's royal and noble ancestors through the heraldic creatures that feature on their coats of arms. They're based on a menagerie of statues that guarded Westminster Abbey during the Queen's 1953 coronation. The White Lion on this coin is a heraldic beast associated with the family of Anne de Mortimer, through whom Henry VII, the first Tudor king, claimed royal descent. This design by Jody Clark shows the lion with one paw resting on the shield, emblazoned with a white rose, encircled by a golden sun: a symbol linked to the House of York. All this is set upon a textured chainmail background, differentiating it from the proof versions of the coin. Unlike the Lion of England, the Lion of Mortimer is uncrowned. Clark is also the artist behind the portrait of Her Majesty that features on the obverse: her fifth and final definitive effigy used on UK coinage. This 24-carat (0.9999 fine) gold edition weighs 7.81 grams and measures 22.00 millimetres in diameter, having a nominal face value of £25. For added protection, the coin is housed in either a capsule or a sleeve. There may be some superficial production marks on the coin, which is perfectly normal for mass-produced coins and doesn't take away from their bullion value.
