This 1797 Third Guinea features George III first Laurel Head on the obverse and the date below a crown on the reverse. Minted only during the reign of George III, the Third Guinea was struck from 1797 to 1813. These small gold coins of George III were the last striking of the denomination. At the time, they were known as seven shilling pieces. A gap of four years ensued before the sovereign appeared in the currency.
