These magnificent animals have been intrinsically linked to South African currency since 1988 when they were first used on the South African banknote range. For the first time in 2019, the South African Mint released a series of coins which had the Big Five as its theme. The so called “Big 5” are the African Elephant, the Lion, the Rhino, the Leopard and the Buffalo. In 2023, the Big Five Series II continues with the launch of a new design of the Leopard. The obverse design of the coins portrays the full faceof the animal, in distinct detail, along with the SouthAfrican coat of arms. The reverse of each coin featurestwo halves of the face of a leopard, so when two ormore coins are placed side by side, a complete face iscreated.
