These magnificent animals have been intrinsically linked to South African currency since 1988 when they were first used on the South African banknote range. In 2021, the incredibly popular series returns in the Big Five Series II. The Rhino is the third of the ferocious five to be featured in this series. Rhinoceroses are easily recognised by their prehistoric features such as armour-like bodies and the horns on their foreheads.. **About The Coins** The 2022 design features a new rendition of the rhino on the obverse.Most of the surface area of the obverse is taken by a view of a Rhinoceros, facing right.Below, surrounded by two curved ornaments reminiscent of ivory tusks, the legend SOUTH AFRICA is separated from the inscription BIG FIVE 2022 by a small Coat of Arms of South Africa. The reverse of the coin features two halves of the rhino’s face, detailing its eye, ears and horn. This ingenious design allows for a complete close-up of a rhino to be seen only when two of the coins are placed next to each other. When multiple coins are placed next to each other, a herd is formed.
