Sea serpents are among the most fearsome sea monsters and appear in stories by the Roman poet Virgil. Sightings of the mystical creatures by sailors, which are said to have taken place mainly in the North Atlantic and in bays off Norway, presumably go back to the so-called oarfish, a deep-sea fish with an approximately 8-metre-long, snake-like body.
