**The Britannia 2020 United Kingdom** **The Spirit of a Nation** Nearly two thousand years ago, a figure was shaped to symbolise a nation and its people. The Romans imagined a noble, graceful warrior and placed her on coins with the legend, Britannia, the new province they had claimed. Britannia has been reimagined many times and she has appeared on the coins of every British monarch from Charles II through to Her Majesty The Queen. The artists of each age have depicted her in ways that reflect the ideas and style of their time. Through every incarnation, Britannia has taken on more layers of meaning and come to embody the spirit of a nation. The 2020 Britannia is a revelation. Created by artist James Tottle, the new design is respectful of the past but also contemporary. Britannia stands facing into the wind, a trident planted into the rocks as the waves crash around her. On her arm she holds a shield featuring the head of a lion. **Key Features** - An original design created by artist James Tottle - Britannia is a flagship coin of The Royal Mint, with the iconic figure having been struck on the nation’s coinage since 1672 - The 2020 design follows in a long line of creative interpretations of Britannia going back to Roman Britain **The Design** **The Reverse** “I felt that a strong pose with a striking silhouette of Britannia in the foreground alongside the Union flag in the background would produce a well-balanced image; I also wanted to feature the lion so I worked it onto the shield. The image also needed some movement and drama so I used crashing waves and a billowing dress to achieve this.” James Tottle **The Obverse** Jody Clark is a member of The Royal Mint’s coin design team and is the youngest designer to have created a definitive coinage portrait of Her Majesty The Queen. Jody is in a rare position as a modern coin designer. Since creating the coinage portrait of The Queen, his designs can be found on both sides of several new coins, like the coins in The Queen’s Beasts Collection.
