The coin was struck by the **New Zealand Mint** from one ounce of 99.9% silver. The partially colored motive features an impressive image of the Pterodactyl in front of a prehistoric landscape. The inscription "PTERODACTYL" is also included in the design. The reverse depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as well as the denomination and the year of issue. The Pterodactyl was a relatively small pterosaur with a maximum wing span of 1.5 meters. Fossil specimens of the flying lizard were mainly found in Europe and Africa and allowed a reconstruction true to the original due to their good preservation.
