The reverse shows the Ian Rank Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the denomination and year of issue. Originally known as the biologist Alec Holland, Swamp Thing™ made his first appearance in 1971 in the DC Comics House of Secrets #92. Due to an accident in a secret goverment lab, the biologist fell into a swamp along with large quantities of his just-discovered elixir. As a result, the spirit of Alec Holland merged with the swamp plant and became a human-like being with abilities of a plant.
