The World War 1 Heroes of Niue 1 oz Silver coin commemorates the 149 Niue recruits (from a population of only 4,000) who joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in October 1915. Many of these men perished due to lack of immunity to illnesses and the harsh European cold. Niue commemorates the contribution and sacrifice made by these men, with annual ANZAC Day (Memorial Day) services held on April 25. The tragedy of this unique story is tempered with pride that their nation and men participated. 2015 marks the 100th Anniversary of these Niuean Heroes leaving their homes to serve their country. This beautifully designed 1 oz Silver coin which combines antique finish with a subtle use of colour. The relief engraving symbolically features a warrior in traditional costume, kneeling in remembrance of the Niuean heroes who lost their lives in World War One. Two blood-red Poppies honour the ultimate sacrifice made 100 years ago by these brave men.
