The reverse of each coin shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as well as the weight, fineness and year of issue. Māori tradition distinguishes between four winds that prevail in New Zealand. The east wind, **Te Hau Rāwhiti**, follows the path of the sun across the sky, whereas the south wind, **Te Hau Tonga**, brings rain and cold weather. The main prevailing wind is the west wind **Te Hau-ā-uru**. This wind brings the rainfall that favors the lush vegetation on the west coast. The warm north wind is called **Te Hau Raki**. The qualities and temperatures of the four winds are emphasized by means of the different colors of the coins.
