Born as Madeleine Cinquin, the "Mother of the Garbage People" belonged to the religious community of "Notre Dame de Sion" and taught at the Order's schools in Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia. After her retirement as a teacher, she decided to live in the slums of Cairo, where she lived for over 12 years in the midst of need and poverty. In October 2008 Sœur Emmanuelle died at the age of 99. Several missions, including the Swiss Association of Friends of Sister Emmanuelle (ASASE), continue her life's work today. The motive of the coin shows a portrait of the beloved nun as well as the inscriptions "SŒUR EMMANUELLE 1908-2008" and "IL SUFFIT D'AIMER" (Love is enough).
