Born in Geneva on June 28th, 1907 and died in Bora Bora on March 7th, 1995, Paul-Émile Victor was not only a polar explorer, but also an ethnologist and writer, as well as the namesake of the French Polar Institute IPEV (Institut polaire français Paul Emile Victor). The **International Polar Year** refers to a large-scale program of exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic. The two-year campaign, involving thousands of scientists from more than 60 countries, is arguably the most significant global polar research initiative of the last fifty years.
