They marked the beginning of industrial change in the United States. The silver coin features a female worker, a so-called "mill girl", who made up the majority of the Lowell Mill's workforce. Mill girls became an important voice for the workforce by advocating better working conditions and education. The reverse traditionally depicts a portrait of George Washington and the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and "QUARTER DOLLAR".
