The motive in color features the American inventor and entrepreneur Thomas Alva Edison in his workshop. To the right edge of the coin is a light bulb, as well as the year of the invention "1879". Also included in the design is the year of issue "2023" and the inscription "LIBERTY". The reverse features the American bald eagle with an oak branch in its talons. Framing the eagle design are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR - 1OZ. FINE SILVER." The light bulb, often attributed to Thomas Edison, was actually the result of contributions from several inventors over a period of years. Sir Hiram Maxim and Sir Joseph Swan independently produced prototypes in the 1870s. Edison perfected the technology in 1879 and, through further development, made the light bulb commercially viable.
