The motive in color depicts a representation of a gramophone together with the year of invention "1887" as well as circularly arranged staves. The bottom edge of the coin features the year of issue "2023" while the inscription "LIBERTY" lines the top edge of the coin. The reverse features the American bald eagle with an oak branch in its talons. Framing the eagle design are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR - 1OZ. FINE SILVER." The invention of the first gramophone can be traced back to Emil Berliner (1851-1929), who had previously experimented with Thomas Alva Edison's phonograph. His own resulting invention, which he called the "gramophone," was patented in Washington in September 1887 and first introduced to the public in the United States a year later. The gramophone is considered to be the mechanical predecessor of the record player; a circular zinc plate with a diameter of twelve centimeters and covered with a layer of wax served as the sound carrier. The gramophone made it possible to play this original form of the record for a duration of about one minute.
