Conveying an eerie sense of foreboding, the poster for the 1979 hit movie gave viewers a spine-tingling taste of the horror to come. Designed by Philip Gips and Steve Frankfurt, the poster depicts a giant mottled egg below the film’s title. A V-shaped crack at the egg’s base spills a sickly yellow-green light. The oval pod floats in darkness above a latticed grille and the movie’s ominous tagline: 'In space no one can hear you scream'. An image that spoke instantly of unimaginable terror, it was the perfect representation of the horror and mystery the film would bring generations of moviegoers.
