Theodor Billroth (1829-1894) was an outstanding surgeon of the 19th century and is often considered the founder of modern abdominal surgery. He introduced a number of surgical innovations, including the first successful removal of a stomach tumor and the development of various surgical techniques and instruments. The design of the gold coin features a portrait of the famous doctor along with the staff of Asclepius. The design is surrounded by the inscriptions "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH", "THEODOR BILLROTH", "2009" and "50 EURO". The reverse depicts the surgeon performing an operation with his colleagues.
