### Celebrated Physicians of Austria (2.) - Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis 50 Euro - 10 Gram Gold - Proof - 2nd Issue of the "Celebrated Physicians of Austria" Series - Mintage 50,000 pieces - With Certificate of Authenticity - Delivery in original Box The second issue of the four-part series "**Celebrated Physicians of Austria**" is dedicated to **Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis**. Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis (1818-1865), often referred to as the "savior of mothers", was the first to identify the causes of puerperal fever and helped significantly reduce the mortality of young mothers through hygiene measures. Despite the impressive results of his discovery, Semmelweis met with great resistance from colleagues. His findings were not widely accepted until decades later, with the development of bacteriology. The design of the gold coin features a portrait of the famous doctor along with the staff of Asclepius. The design is surrounded by the inscriptions "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH", "IGNAZ PHILIPP SEMMELWEIS", "2008" and "50 EURO". The reverse depicts a bird's eye view of the old General Hospital in Vienna, where Semmelweis was stationed in the maternity clinic. This fascinating **[Euro gold coin](https://www.emk.com/en-us/euro/gold-coins/ "Euro Gold Coin")** is delivered in the original box from the **[Austrian Mint](https://www.emk.com/en-us/euro/austria/ "Austrian Euro coins")** including a certificate of authenticity.
